I can think of two areas to explore - communications and
credentials.
For communications, you can run Wireshark at the client
end, and watch what packets are sent and received, when
the email client starts to run. Does the server respond
at all ? Do any packets come back from the server ?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireshark
Credentials can involve many things - workgroups, domains,
username, password, and so on. At least some of the
information, as it travels over Ethernet, will be
encrypted, so looking at the low level packets is
not likely to help.
You really need to find a newsgroup that deals with
email server setup, to get more information on
examining server logs, or using administrative level
tools, to determine what is happening with that
client email. Maybe something like
microsoft.public.exchange.admin
You are more likely to find admin people there, whereas
this is a hardware group.
Also, many workplaces have apprenticeship programs, and
"senior admins" and "junior admins". If you are a
"junior admin", then having someone with more experience
to mentor you, is an asset. If you just graduated from
school, and are doing all the administration for a
small business, then you have no one to go to for
advice. Using newsgroups will not give you timely
advice when problems occur. People want instant
solutions, not excuses.
