how to check my printers

I have a couple of HP Deskjet printers I found in the back of our closet.
Not sure why they're there.

Is there any kind of a quick and dirty test I can run with those to find out
if the printers are good or not? Something without hooking 'em up to the
computer. Just powering up.

Hi!

Plug them in and turn them on? That'd be quick and maybe the best you can
hope for if you don't want to put ink in them.

With many HP printers, it is possible to hold the "paper advance" button
down for a few seconds and get a test print.

Not without ink in them, it isn't. :)

If these are "old" and there are cartridges in them, the internal test page is
a good indication. If the printer feeds paper and prints a page (even if it
puts no ink on the paper) there is a very high probability that they will be OK
with new print cartridges. Most old HP's will print a test page as William has
described.

for button sequences to print the internal test pages.

They've got ink. I just want to make sure the basic print function
integrity is present in the printers before going to the trouble of hooking
'me in.

The thing about holding down the paper feed button is good. I'll try that.
Thanks.
