I have created several subforms to use a different record source from the
original form. Is it possible to change the format from columnar to tabular
or do they inherit the format from the parent page?

No,
subforms are individual forms only displayed on the main form.
You can change it to whatever you want.

A Subform is just a form in its own right. You can set its properties
(the Default View property in particular) to Single Form, Continuous
Form, or Datasheet, completely independently of the format of the
parent form (which must be Single, as you cannot put a subform on the
other two types).

Just a note - normally a Subform is used to display or edit records in
a "many" side table related to the main form's "one" side table.
