How to change login and user names?

I upgraded from Win98 to WinXP and created several user accounts on the
XP machine. However, this process associated the name on the Win98
machine with the first user account created after the upgrade. So
there's a different underlying name associated with the name on the
login screen. Where is this information kept so that I can change it?

Go into control panel and then user accounts.

I tried going into User Accounts but it does not contain all of the
info about the accounts. Where this shows up is when I access the
computer from another machine over a network, I see the underlying
names rather than the login names.

So when I created my first user account, the login name and the name I
see in User Accounts is New Name, but the name I see from over the
network is Old Name. And when I created my second user account, the
login name is Old Name, but the name I see over the network is Old
Name_2.

So I'm trying to find where Old Name for the first account and Old
Name_2 for the second account is stored.
