I am using Windows XP Home Edition. I am using my laptop
at work and they are using Windows 2000 server. I cannot
access as I did in past. They indicated I needed to
change my "domain" name and type my password to access
drives in workgroup. How do I accomplish changing my
domain name?

in the start menu>right click computer and choose properties>then choose the
Compter name tab>you will see button to change the domain name.

On my version, the domain name does not exist.

I have two options:

1. Computer Description

2. Full Computer Name

3. Workgroup

Windows XP home cannot be joined to a domain
But to access the share on the win2K server all you need is to
net use * \\servername\sharename /u:domainn_name\username <password>
This is on the assumption that the win2k server is in a domain
and you have the right domain user credentials to access the share

Hi Bob,
As I understand it the issue here is that you are making a VPN connection
to your work thought a Windows 2000 VPN server. Your local IS department is
telling you need to supply your domain information to access resources on
the office network.

As a point of clarification Windows XP Home Edition can not join a domain,
this ability was removed for the Home Edition SKU. You really should not
have to join your home computer to your work domain for this to work
either. What you will need to do is when you connect to the VPN and are
prompted for your credentials the username should be in the form of <Domain
Name>\<Username> and the password is your usual network password. This
should pass your domain credentials to the VPN server and allow you to
access domain resources via the VPN connection.

Home edition cannot join a domain.
You can change the workgroup name to match
the domain name that is being used, but this will
gain you little - perhaps network neighborhood
convenience, perhaps not.
When you need to access resources on the domain
just remember to always provide your account info
in form domain\username unless there is a box for
the domain.

Unfortunately, XP Home can't be joined to a domain. That is the way
that Microsoft designed the operating system. XP Professional is
built for enterprise networking. There are limited ways to access
files and folders on a domain using XP HOME. However, just make it
easy on yourself and update your laptop to XP PRO.

Matthew--

right click on my computer icon on your desktop click on
computer name tab and change domain in box supplied you
may be prompted for an accoun that has permission to
allow access to the domain tyr your user name and
password for that domain if this doesn't work this would
be supplied by your administrator.

Guess I have to purchase the pro version. I didn't want
to fork out $200.00 but now I have to. It's a shame that
Windows 98 is more acceptable than XP Home.

Hi Bob,
You should not have to upgrade to Pro if all you want to do is access
shares over the VPN. You only need pro to join a domain. If that is a
requirement where you are that is one thing. But with XP Home Edition you
should be able to access your corporate shares over VPN without having to
join the domain.
