Hi,

This was my first attempt.

I simply connected my Sony cam to my laptop.
Used the USB port.
(dont have a fire wire card)

Cam was switched ON and in play back mode.

Started Movie Maker and executed File->Capture video

It gave an error- "A video capture device was not
detected. verify the device is turned on and connected
properly and try again"

I know i am missing some thing but what ?
Do I have to install my cam in "New Hardware" in Control
Panel or something ?

thks

You must connect your cam to your laptop using the Firewire interface (which
should be indicated on your laptop by either 1394 or IEEE1394). Most modern
laptops come with this interface, and usually the 4-pin version (like the
one on the camcorder) so you'd need a 4-pin to 4-pin firewire cable.

Once you've done this then MM2 will detect your camcorder straight away.

Thats just it.

I dont want to invest in a firewire card.

when I have a USB port.

(USB 2.0 and FireWire speeds are comaprable, 480Mbps v/s
400 Mbps)

The Sony camera won't output DV through the USB port, only through the
Firewire port. It will only output stills and video stored on the memory
stick via USB.

Not DV, no, but some of them can output video via USB, at a reduced
quality, of course. I note that the OP was careful to omit one
particularly useful bit of information: the camera model.

Sorry,

My cam is a Sony DCRTRV22 (video recorded on a MiniDV in
Digital-8 mode)
Has USB and DV ports.
