Hi i am trying to reset my laptop with the disc supplied
but the built in cd rom drive is dead. i have an external
drive but it wont boot the reset disc from this drive as
the external drive is only booted when window xp starts! i
have been told u can do it but i have to do somthing with
the bios thingy?!?!?! any help would be greatfully receved
Thanks Ben

Look at the manual that came with your laptop. Find out how to enter the
bios. Look in startup options to see if you can, in fact, boot from an
external drive. Not all M/B's can!

Isn't there usually a standard button or combination of buttons on
holds during startup to get the BIOS to appear?

I too am interested in this. Currently Macs allow one to hold th
option key which scans all attached drives (USB, Firewire, optical) fo
operating systems and then allows the user to select that drive and boo
the OS from it.

A very handy option if you want to use a machine but not the interna
drive. Perhaps slightly slower thaan the internal SATA

Unfortunately not... it's often the DEL key or F2 or F1 but I've seen so
many others during my time. The quickest way to find out is often to
disconnect the keyboard then start the PC. When it doesn't find a keyboard
attached, the BIOS should put a message on the screen something like Press
xxx to enter the BIOS.
