tired of locking the keyboard in the car. Is there a way to block users on my PC without losing their data?
Also: How can I scan a form (that I need to fill out) to Microsoft Word Processor or the notebook so I can type it in insteadof using my poor handwriting? when I click on send to notebook, the program does not respond and a error report is sent. When I click on send to microsoft Word processor itsays cannot open

Tell the users to buy own PC...hate cheapo's.

2nd question..use copy and paste!

Yes, there is a way to block other users. Don't let them use the computer
at all. Make them buy their own computer and they can do whatever they want
with it. You need to use Optical Character Recognition software to scan a
hard copy of a document and make it available to a word processor like
Microsoft Word.

Russ;
Many scanners come wit OCR (Optical Character Reader) software.
Check your scanner documentation/software and/or your local computer
supply.

Set a password for each user:

With respect to the second question.

A scanner creates an image. You have two choices:

Use an Optical Character Reader program to convert the scanner image
into a text document that you can edit. You may have one with the programs
that came with your scanner.

Use an image editing program and scan your form into that program. Then
use the add text feature of your image editing program to complete the form.
Paint will work {Start, All Programs, Accessories}. It is also possible,
but IMO, harder to use Word.

Generally a scanner cannot open a program. Open the program first. IMO it
is better to use the scanner features of the program to initiate the scan.
In Paint, use File, From Scanner or Camera. In Word, use Insert, Picture,
From Scanner. Image editing programs, such as Picture It and Adobe
Photoshop, have features for obtain an image from a scanner.

the others users are my children and there is nothing to hate abot them
copy is not a valid option because I get a line through a circle like "no smoking."

perhaps I should have requested parent replys only on this one. I thank you for your software advice. Now I'll use a search engine to find it.

Yeah really, tough crowd, eh? :>)

I have a password and am the only administrator on my pc. I'm not worried about my account being opened. I am looking for a way to temporaraly block any or all of the limited users. Taking away privliges is the inteligent way to disapline your loved ones.

Russ, Jupiter's response is generic, showing how to create the accounts. The principles
and instructions given apply in your case. The idea is simple: Create limited user
accounts for your kids with passwords, and you keep the passwords.

Try that before you jump through hoops with all kinds of high security this and that.
Most kids aren't computer geeks. They just surf, chat, and look at porn - normal.

I will look for the OCR program. I've been using newsgroups for about a week and am unfamilier with many of the terms I read in answers. What does IMO mean
I have XP Home. Start-all programs-assories doesn't have a "Paint" that I could find
I'm able to insert pic of form from file (but no "from scanner") to "word" but can't edit. This must be what you mean about a program to change image to document. Thanks

I agree but I don't want to have to be home for them to use it or go to the PC with passwords constantly. That is an unacceptible solution. I'm sure I'll find a simple solution someday. Untill then I'll be taking the keyboard with me like a caveman
Oh yeah, I'd like to thank everyone in this posting for the parent councilling.

We were running Win98 back when the kids were at home, and the only
thing a user logon governed was the profile - you couldn't really lock
them out by deleting/restricting their accounts. In a home setup, you
couldn't stop them from just creating a new account and pressing on. So
we "grounded" our kids by having a boot password. When they were good,
it was the password they knew. When they weren't good... it took less
than five minutes to change, and they couldn't even bring up the
computer.

Our kids were almost smart enough to cover their tracks... they even
found and edited the IE history. But they didn't clear out the address
bar history. I typed in "http://www.l", and the system helpfully tried
to fill in the address for me. No, I didn't care to visit
"lovegoddesses.com", or whatever the heck it was. Busted :-)

I haven't used the boot password on XP. On XP (Pro), I'd probably just
go into the Control Panel and temporarily disable their accounts... lock
'em out. It won't hurt the account. I'd have to fiddle with it to
figure it out, but it's not too hard.

Hope this helps!

create accounts for each user then you can set up times/dates for them to be
able to use the computer!
You will need OCR (optical Character recognition software) to be able to
convert the graphics file into text these sometimes work sometimes not You
could also scan as jpg open in graphics program then put text boxes in the
spots you wanted to type into!

I looked into changing the password, control panel-user account, but it involves too many results that I don't want to deal with. They could start another account anyway as you mentioned. but I like the boot password approach. That's the best thing I've heard yet. Now if I can find how to do it. Thanks

Hi Wayne,
could you please explain the following advice you gave me in very simple terms?
how to scan as jpg
how to open in graphics program
how to put in text boxes
I can follow directions to the letter. Please give without taking any knowlege on my part for granted.
thank you for your time.

why don't you create a user account called "Kids" or something and set
it up without a password, so they just click that to enter the
computer.

When they need to be disciplined, put the password on to lock them
out. When you want to let them back on the computer, take the password
off.

That way, when they're actually allowed on, there's no passwords to
hassle with, and you won't have to be there.

There are numerous "parental control" program available. Some you can even
download trial versions of.

Click here: http://www.syringa.net/Parental-Control/Parental-Control.htm

This review is about a year old, but it does give you some options and
places to start looking.

Hope this helps.....

they need indivdual passwords. denying them their own privacy is not somthing I want to do. But if I did choose this option and put on a password, when removing, it afects all web passwords. Go to user accounts and choose change password as administrator. You will see the warnings I'm talking about. Thanks
