How to: Backup/Restore the Registry

I want to make changes to the registry on XP.
I know the registry can cause major problems (like not
booting), so i want to understand the process of backup &
recovery of the registry. This is most probably
documented somewhere, but i'll be danged if I can find it.

System restore will back up your registry and system files, as will
ntbackup. For "everyday" (like experimenting with new software) I like
erunt.zip, a 575K freeware utility.
