I recently purchased a Dell PC with XP but when I tried to
back up to the CD I can not figure out how to make this
happen and there are no direction as to how this is done.
Can you help?
Thanks

This requires packet writing, a function not natively supported by Windows
XP.

This requires third party software such as the Direct CD component of Easy
CD Creator, www.roxio.com or the InCD component of Nero, www.nero.com.

Check the web sites for version compatibility with XP as well as compatible
CD-Writers.

The Windows backup program won't write to CD, you'll need to backup to
the harddrive and then copy the backup to a CD.

If you want, you can get other backup software that will do what you
want.

If you have third party packet writing software installed, XP's backup
utility will backup directly to CD. Most backup utilities that write
directly to CD require that unless they are compatible with and are able to
use XP's built-in CD writing function.

I beg to differ. I have XP Pro and Roxio Direct CD installed. XP Backup will
NOT allow me to choose the CDRW drive as a backup location.

What version? I've used XP backup with Direct CD without issue.

I forgot to ask, were you attempting to back up to a CD formatted for packet
writing?

Michael: It is not clear from your ? whether a packet writing formatted CD
is required. I would think it is, but please clarify. I am between a rock
and a hard place trying to do a backup. Your suggestion is a possibility for
me. Thanks. CGS

very odd - for some reason it now works! (Before, it wouldn't "see" the
external CDRW drive as a backup media!)

I apologize for the confusion. Yes, the CD must be packet written
formatted. In other words, you must use whatever packet writing software
you have installed to first format any CD to be used for this purpose.
