how to back up drivers

You can't really backup the drivers as such. The drivers are mostly
stored in the \WINDOWS\system32\drivers directory, a few are in
WINDOWS\system32. Drivers need to be "installed", when they fail it
isn't usually just a matter of replacing a single file with a backup
copy, you need the .inf or .exe file that comes with the driver package
in order to properly install the driver so a backup of the contents of
just the \WINDOWS\system32\drivers is usually of little value.

The drivers for your hardware will usually come on a CD with your
computer or other hardware that you purchase, or you will have
downloaded them from the internet, these are the files that you should
keep stored in a safe location.

Consider getting some partition imaging software. This will backup a lot
more than just drivers, but then a lot more can go wrong than just drivers.
I like Acronis True Image; others prefer Norton Ghost. For more programs,
some free, see: http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads3.html

As for drivers themselves, they are hardware specific, and sometimes
operating system specific. For example, your motherboard's drivers would be
of no value on a random motherboard or new PC. And, with so many devices
being built into motherboards, that applies to most drivers.

The drivers for a printer or scanner are worth keeping, since they should
work on any PC with the same operating system. However, the latest/best
versions are usually available form the manufacture's website. But, for
convenience, I do tend to save the installation packages. This can be very
important in cases where the manufacturer goes out of business, or stops
supporting a given operating system.

Drivers for video and sound card, if really separate cards and not simply
built into the motherboard, are worth downloading and saving.

mark,
If you own a Dell PC/Laptop, there should be a copy of the driver & maybe
some factory installed software updates, install files in the following
location(s):
C:\Dell\Drivers
C:\NVIDIA (Nvidia harware)
There may some additional driver files in the following folder, if the OS
was installed using a restore partition:
C:\drivers
