Hi,
I would like to join or separate wmv files which were
already encoded (WMenc) with identical size/bitrate etc. -
the moviemaker seems only to have some pre-definded
specific enconding parameters (DVD-quality etc.) - as a
result e.g. two simply joined wmv-files were completely re-
encoded. It is possible to change this?

Hi Dietrich,

Re-Encoding as a rule only takes part where there is a transition or
effect, but if the input source does not match the output type selected I
guess that must force re-encoding as well.

You can use the Windows Media Tools (Encoding) to create a profile that can
be used in Movie Maker. There is a specific tool in the pack that will let
you do this but the name escapes me at the moment. I would be surprised if
you were unable to create a profile that does not match the encoding
options that you want. Once you have that profile you should get no
re-encoding.

There are some free tools that will simply splice the two clips together
and therefore completely circumvent Movie Maker. There are a few Links on
my website that might help....check out the Video links. DVDR-Help might be
a good one

Hi Dietrich --
John's suggestion (using WMEncoder to generate a new profile) will certainly
allow you to get your video published into the profile you desire, but be
aware that MM2.0 does not currently do "smart recompression" for WMV files.
WMV files are always re-encoded on publish in MM2.0, even if the target
profile matches the source content.

Hope this helps!

Hi there,

Now I am sure someone (an MVP) told us a few weeks back that it always did
Smart Encoding. That's why I gave the advise I did. Thanks for putting the
record straight Kristen

We had a young woman by the name of Kristen who lives in Newport News stay
hear (UK) for a few days over Christmas Holidays...that would be too much
of a co-incidence !!
