Hi!

I'd like to know how to assign a 'read-only' password to a
folder that I'd like to share with others on the LAN.
Earlier versions of Windows allowed one to do this quite
easily.

Thanks.

PWs for folders do not exist under XP. One work-around is to
create a folder with a secret sharename, like SECRET$, and only
tell your friends about that SECRET$. The trailing '$' means that
XP will not casually expose the sharename.

Or, you can enable the GUEST account with a PW, and only tell
your friends that PW.

Or, you may be able to create an encrypted folder with a PW and
only tell your friends about that. But, apparently, this capability
is destroyed by installing some third-party products; I suspect
that installing WinZip wiped out this capability on my XP HE PC.
