How to archive emails with Outlook without deleting them from Hotm

Hi, I am reposting a question from another forum, since it was not answered
there and I would like to know the answer.

I would like to archive my old emails in Outlook 2007 so that the program
runs more efficiently, but at the same time want all of my emails to remain
in my Hotmail account for easy searching and reference when I am away from my
home computer.

If I archive my emails in Outlook, will they stay in Hotmail or will they be
removed from my Hotmail folders? Do I need to take any special configuration
into account?

How are you connecting to Hotmail? If you use the connector or http and
archive, they will be removed from the account online. If you use POP3,
leave mail on server and do not delete online when deleted in outlook, they
will be left online.

As for efficiency, unless your mailbox is really big (like a lot more than 2
gb), you are unlikely to increase the efficiency enough to make it
worthwhile.

Thanks, that was a clear answer.
I'm using HTTP, so I suppose I can "never" use the archive function in
Outlook, as I would like to keep a permanent record of my communications
within Hotmail.

So far I'm about 1GB on my pst file, so I have some room according to you.
After about a year, though, I think Ill run into problems.

As for efficiency, I have noticed subjectively that Outlook simply takes a
long time when starting up to pull all the new emails from Hotmail. (Longer
than it would take to open Hotmail from a web browser). So that's why I
assumed it was due to the pst size (since the new emails themselves
weren't/aren't particularly large). Any thoughts as to why this might be
case?

You'd notice a big performance increase when you use the Outlook Connector
and also update Office 2007 to Service Pack 2 level.

The connector will always be slower because it is processing the mail - the
browser just displays it.
