Hello,

I've got a PC that I've just recently upgraded with Windows XP
Professional. I used to have Windows 98 and I was able to easily type
in Russian because I had replaced the KBDRU.KBD in the Windows\System
directory file with a new .kbd file that had a better layout for the
Russian keys. However, after my upgrade to Windows XP, not only can I
not type in Russian anymore, but I can't find the .kbd files to put
things back the way they were with Win98. Can anyone give me an idea
of what I need to do to fix this? Thanks for any help!

Regards,

Frank

Go to your Control Panel, Regional and Language Options, click the
Languages tab, click the Details button, click the Add button, and add
input languages to your heart's delight.

Ok, I'll try it. But my keboard file is a .kbd file which was used
with Windows 98. Does Windows XP use the .kbd file or a .dll for the
keyboard files? Will it read the .kbd file? I'd just like to be sure
before I do something that might screw up what I've already got.
Thanks again.

Frank

Hi

Windows XP's keyboard layouts are already hardcoded into the system and I
doubt it could read KBD files. Most commonly used keyboard formats are
already there, however :)

Ok, I was afraid of that. The most commonly used Russian keyboard
layout is close to the one I use, but with just slight differences
enough to slow me way down...for now anyway. Looks like I may just
have a learning curve to overcome. Thank you all for your help!

No, you don't need to learn anything - it takes you just one-time
job ~20 minutes to install kbdru.DLL included into XP (.kbd
don't work there) and then replace it with the layout you want -
called usually phonetic or homophopnic -
"A'-'A', 'O'-'O',...

Please see "Russian Keyboard: standard and phonetic" section on my
site.
