How do you add Icons for folders to the left Icon File Open Panel?

this is not the favorites folder??

thank you

Are you talking about the Places Bar where there are selected locations in
the "look In" section on the left side of the dialog box? Which program and
version of Vista are you using?

The ICONS on The "OPEN" Panel I want to change are not in the favorites or
links folder shortcuts...Here's the ICONS listed on The Open Panel left side
I want to change
-Recent Places Icon
-Desktop Icon
-User Name Icon
-Computer Icon
-Network Icon

I can't find these Icon Shortcuts anywhere...How do I change these?? Thanks

You are describing the old style Places Bar which has been deprecated and
replaced by the Links section in Vista. This was easily done in XP using the
TweakUI utility, but this utility is no longer available in Vista.

There are still a lot of programs that display the Places Bar and you can
still configure and change these icons in Vista. How you do this depends on
which version of Vista you are using.

If you let us know which version of Vista you are using we can help.

I do understand that you are talking about the Places Bar. Those icons you
see there are not standard shortcuts, they are placed there by entries in
the registry.

Let me know which edition of Vista you have installed and I will give you
the procedure for adding to or replacing those icons.

Hi, Ronnie ... hope you don't mind me butting in here ... I would like to
add the Public folder to the left pane in the Open files dialog ... I use
the Public folders a lot to move things from my standard user to my Admin
user.

I am running Ultimate on my desktop and Home Premium on my notebook. Thanks.

Hi Vanilla

This is a simple procedure with the Ultimate edition.

If you are using Vista Business, Enterprise, or Ultimate you can use the
Group Policy Editor.

1. Press the WINKEY+R to open the Run dialog. Type: gpedit.msc and click
OK.

2. In the Group Policy Editor, navigate to:
User Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Windows
Explorer/Common Open File Dialog.

3. In the right side pane, double click "Items displayed in places bar".

4. Click the 'Enable' button. You have 5 sections there where you can enter
the path to a location that you want displayed in the places bar. Enter the
path to the folder that you want displayed in each of the sections. (ie: if
you want the Public folder placed there, enter C:\Users\Public) When you are
finished, click Apply/OK.

Sorry, I meant to add the instructions for configuring the Places Bar in the
Home Premium edition, since you are also using this edition on your laptop.
In the 'Home' editions, you need to use the registry since the Group Policy
Editor is not included in these editions.

If you are using the Home Basic or Home Premium version of Vista perform the
following.

1. Copy the lines between the dotted lines below. (do not copy the dotted
lines)

----------

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\comdlg32]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\comdlg32\Placesbar]
"Place0"=""
"Place1"=""
"Place2"=""
"Place3"=""
"Place4"=""

----------

Paste this text into Notepad and save the file as placesbar.reg to the
Desktop.

Go to the Desktop, double click this file and OK the registry merge. This
will place the proper keys and values into the registry.

2. Press the WINKEY+R and type: regedit.exe and click OK.

3. In the registry editor, navigate to the following location:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\comdlg32\Placesbar

4. In the right side pane, you should see the 5 values that we created in
step 1.

Double click the first value (Place0) and in the Value Data line, enter the
path to the folder that you want in the top position of the places bar.

ie: if you want a shortcut to your users "Public" folder, you would enter:

C:\Users\Public

Once this procedure is complete, you should see the icons for the folders
you defined appear on the Places Bar.

Thanks very much ... that was very straightforward and makes it easy for me
(g) ... and I got the Ultimate inx also ... appreciate the help ... vanilla

P.S. I wish Win Mail would allow separate settings for e-mail and news for
"include message in reply" ... forgot I had turned that off ... don't want
it in e-mail but do want it in news ... sorry ...
