Yes it does with the exception that XP allows you to lock the taskbar
(and toolbars on it) to prevent the "oh my gosh my taskbar is on the
side and I can't get it back on the bottom" syndrome. I suspect that
your taskbar is locked. Right-click on it and click on the "Lock
Taskbar" which will clear the check. Now, if you are talking about
icons on the Quick Launch Bar, right-click on the ones you don't want
and choose "Delete".

If you are talking about the icons that show in the lower right-hand
corner of your screen (what was called "Systray" in Win9x/ME and is
called "the Notification Area" in XP) then that is a different matter
since those icons represent running programs.

Post back if you need more help.

this is juan...Hope I'm doing this right--that this is a "post back."
(Wondered if i should have started a 'new item,' Malke.

I should have explained my problem further--I'm trying to disable McAfee
Security (replacing it with NetVeda). McAfee is making me a slave to it, by
forcing me to make more than 20 clicks each time i boot up. I've contacted
them and they tell me what to do, and it never works. (Even pressing "Do not
remind me again" is completely ignored the next time. I'm fed up!!!! So i've
decided to simply disable it (but don't want to delete it). Some highly
qualified geeks tell me that simply a firewall is enough protection, if you
have encryption.

I believe XP has WEP. What do you think of that?, Malke.

I do appreciate your very thoughtful, thorough reply. juan

You absolutely need a current version full-featured antivirus and a
firewall installed on any Windows machine that is on the Internet. WEP
is a wireless encryption scheme (and an older, less-secure one at that)
and has nothing to do with this issue.

I'm unfamiliar with NetVeda but I would suggest 1) uninstalling all
McAfee software and 2) replacing it with something better like
Kaspersky or NOD32 for an antivirus (I use F-Prot on my Windows boxen);
3) just use the XP SP2 Windows Firewall.

Both McAfee and Norton are extremely invasive programs and I don't
recommend either of them. If you want a free antivirus, Avast is good.
