Not sure I understand. Outlook has always used Outlook Express for news
reading. Perhaps you were just not aware that you were launching OE
before.
No I wasn't.
I used to use OE up to a year or so ago as this is what came bundled with my
Internet connection. I only used it for email and news. Then I installed
outlook 2000 to synch with my IPaq and so that I could use all the features.
I've installed SR1 since then. I don't remember doing any particular
configuring except that in control panel|internet options the programs bit
always said to use outlook (not outlook express) for HTML, Email,
Newsgroups, calendar and contacts with netmeeting for internet calls.
A few months back I got broadband but made no further changes. Then
suddenly last week the news button vanished and I couldn't put it back -
permantly at least.
However, if your News button is configured correctly in Outlook, Outlook
Express will launch in "news only" mode, i.e. with all email accounts
disabled. Never have I seen it do otherwise.
What exact steps did you use to regain the News command? Are you sure
Outlook is set as your default for E-mail and the OE is set as your default
for News?
After setting newsgroup program to OE as you suggested I got the
communication errors when I went to news. Ignoring all the complaints about
not being able to dial and after being told to look on on my current
connection (broadand) it would work - that's how I was able to leave these
posts. However, the button still vansihed when I shut outlook down.
Since your last post I shut down the computer and restarted it (in true MS
fashion for the universal panacea) and then changed the newsgroups program
in control panel| internet options back from outlook express to just
microsoft outlook - the original setting. The button now seems restored and
seems to stay there.
This is Outlook 2003, right?
No, Outlook 2000 with SR1
Ah! I did enable automatic updates a few weeks back, something I was
reluctant to do as I wanted to have control over what was installed on my
machine. Maybe something got automatically updated that shouldn't have! I've
now turned that feature off again

I'm sorry if it seemed "impolite" to suggest that you can search the group
It was a matter of the wording used, rather than the sentiment with
which
I
agree.
Anyway....to return to the question. The method suggested has thrown
up
all
sorts of errors to do with dead accounts that outlook express thinks
it
owns
and tries to dial, plus a splash screen for outlook 6 that now pops up when
I go to newsgroups.
I never had this problem before because, as far as I know, I used outlook,
not outlook express for newsgroups. Do you have any idea why this symptom
should have suddenly appeared and why I now need to use the express version?
