How to add a button/menu for newsgroups?

Odd one this.
The button that I had on my toolbar to access newsgroups disappeared. Now
when I customise the toolbar (or even add a new toolbar and place a button
on it) the button only exists for that session. When I shut down outlook and
reopen it the button has gone again. Any ideas?

Not odd at all if you had read the thousands of similar posts in this group.

To get the News command back, go back to the Programs tab in Control Panel |
Internet Options and change the default newsreader to Outlook Express. If
OE prompts you to make it your default newsreader the next time you launch
it, clear the "Always perform this check..." box and then click the No
button.

You may need to reset the Menu Bar and/or restart Outlook and/or reboot your
machine in order to complete the process. Not everyone is reporting success
with this method, but try it and see what happens. If all else fails, you
can always create a desktop shortcut to Outlook Express and include the
/outnews switch -- that gives you the same result as accessing the
newsreader via the News command in Outlook.

Thank you for your kind and considerate advice - maybe next time I shall
post asking how I search the tens of thousands of posts for the thousand or
so that are to do with my problem. But then you will probably say I should
have read the previous posts on how to search first - a bit recursive
really.

Of course I looked before posting! !

Thank you for explaining this highly intuitive recovery technique - Though I
still think that it is odd that I need to do this all of a sudden. Why did
it change to Outlook from outlook express in the first place?.

A search on "News Button" in the Outlook groups on Google took 1.71 seconds
to turn up 36,800 posts.
Not really that difficult.

Assuming that you know that you can search via google for the contents of
posted messages in outlook - which I didn't. ( although I did scan through
the actual newsgroup manually before asking the question!)

My earlier comments were directed at the your apparent need to be impolite
to me first, before offering a set of instructions that were not so obvious,
with no explanation why they should be necessary in the first place. Outlook
(not outlook express) has always worked fine until now.

Please do not assume that everyone posting here is a seasoned user of
outlook groups and should know better than to ask stupid questions. This is
not helpful to the newer users who have a genuine problem that is confusing
them and think they have found a path to a solution via a dedicated
newsgroup. Not everyone knows as much as you, that's why the questions are
asked in the first place.

I'm sorry if it seemed "impolite" to suggest that you can search the group
for an answer before you post. Just doing a simple search in this one group
alone (without even using Google) turned up this answer already posted 30
times in the last week.

It was a matter of the wording used, rather than the sentiment with which I
agree.

Anyway....to return to the question. The method suggested has thrown up all
sorts of errors to do with dead accounts that outlook express thinks it owns
and tries to dial, plus a splash screen for outlook 6 that now pops up when
I go to newsgroups.

I never had this problem before because, as far as I know, I used outlook,
not outlook express for newsgroups. Do you have any idea why this symptom
should have suddenly appeared and why I now need to use the express version?

Howard

Not sure I understand. Outlook has always used Outlook Express for news
reading. Perhaps you were just not aware that you were launching OE before.
However, if your News button is configured correctly in Outlook, Outlook
Express will launch in "news only" mode, i.e. with all email accounts
disabled. Never have I seen it do otherwise.
What exact steps did you use to regain the News command? Are you sure
Outlook is set as your default for E-mail and the OE is set as your default
for News? This is Outlook 2003, right?

No I wasn't.

I used to use OE up to a year or so ago as this is what came bundled with my
Internet connection. I only used it for email and news. Then I installed
outlook 2000 to synch with my IPaq and so that I could use all the features.
I've installed SR1 since then. I don't remember doing any particular
configuring except that in control panel|internet options the programs bit
always said to use outlook (not outlook express) for HTML, Email,
Newsgroups, calendar and contacts with netmeeting for internet calls.

A few months back I got broadband but made no further changes. Then
suddenly last week the news button vanished and I couldn't put it back -
permantly at least.

After setting newsgroup program to OE as you suggested I got the
communication errors when I went to news. Ignoring all the complaints about
not being able to dial and after being told to look on on my current
connection (broadand) it would work - that's how I was able to leave these
posts. However, the button still vansihed when I shut outlook down.

Since your last post I shut down the computer and restarted it (in true MS
fashion for the universal panacea) and then changed the newsgroups program
in control panel| internet options back from outlook express to just
microsoft outlook - the original setting. The button now seems restored and
seems to stay there.
This is Outlook 2003, right?

No, Outlook 2000 with SR1

Ah! I did enable automatic updates a few weeks back, something I was
reluctant to do as I wanted to have control over what was installed on my
machine. Maybe something got automatically updated that shouldn't have! I've
now turned that feature off again

Then none of the posted solutions would apply to your situation. The missing
News button has only been a problem with Outlook 2003, not with earlier
versions.
In all previous versions, it was necessary to specify Outlook (NOT Outlook
Express) as the newsreader in Control Panel > Internet Options--even though
in reality you were actually invoking OE in news only mode. If you specify
Outlook Express, then you'll get OE in full mode--news and mail.
Always specify versions when you post questions.
