How do I stop Microsoft automatic security update emails?

2 weeks ago I turned on the W2000 automatic updates 'keep
my computer up to date' checkbox. I started getting 10-20
emails a day with enclosures. I decided I did not want to
receive the emails. So while logged on to the internet, I
turned OFF the 'keep my computer up to date' hoping that
this would notify Microsoft.

5 days later I am still getting 10-20 Microsoft security
updates per day. How can I stop this?

Thanks
Steven

You are noticing the effects of the w32.swen.a@mm virus. See the
following sites for more information
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected]
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/virus/alerts/swen.asp

If you have a problem with the spam you might want to check out
http://nakawe.se/MMM3 for some ideas about how to utilise a mailwasher
to deal with your email.

And of course, make sure that your antivirus-software is uptodate and
that you scan email-attachments for viruses.

Those emails are NOT from Microsoft and almost certainly contain worms/viruses. You
could try complaining to your ISP about doing a better job filtering them out, but if
they are like my ISP, I doubt any humans work there that you can talk to. I just set
up message rules so that they automatically go to my deleted folder where I delete
them en mass. --- Steve

I agree. This issue is a total nightmare. Typical, isn't it, that
Microsoft haven't posted an answer?

One suggestion - too late for you - would be not to give out your e-mail
address, especially in newgroups. The only way you can receive e-mails is
if you post your e-mail address somewhere. I suggest changing your e-mail
address and then protecting it like gold.
