How secure is my IP?

Every time I connect to the Internet, send e-mail, or
submit any private personal information to a web site, I
am transmitting my IP address over the Internet! With
this address, someone can immediately "Probe" or "Port
Scan" my system for well-known weaknesses &
vulnerabilities to break in. How can I secure my
connection to protect my IP address or possibly hide
my IP address while surfing the net?

Thanks a lot!

Go through an anonymizer program. It usually costs money and it's going to
slow down your system.

Those are the only benefits. It does no good to hide your IP to prevent
scanning. Scanning is typically done to huge blocks of addresses, not
specific addresses. In other words, the scanners don't need your IP to
start with.

The only real purpose of anonymizer programs are as follows.

1: To make money by frightening newbies into thinking the world will end if
someone sees them on the net.

2: A method net stalkers use to try and protect their identity.

3: To ease the minds of the kinds of people who wear tinfoil hats to
protect them from mind control waves beamed from the U.N. building.

Use your neighbor's computer. :)

The IP address is how you are located on the internet, for both
hackers and for the web page you just requested to be sent to you.
You can't easily hide it.

You need a firewall to help protect you.

If your machine is directly exposed to the internet (no firewall or NAT),
they don't need your specific IP address to launch scans of your system..
They just scan ranges of IP addresses looking for "live" machines and then
concentrate on them. Going through an autonomizer will disguise your
activities, but not remove the vulnerability.
