Hi,

I would like to reset my Windows XP installation back to the stage of first
startup of the OEM installation, when you are asked to supply username,
register with Microsoft etc.
I guess most things can be done by going back to first system restore point,
but how do I get Windows to enter the "oem setup" at next reboot?

Thanks
Mike

Back up all your important files then follow the instructions from the
pc manufacturer to restore the pc to factory state. Typically you will
either have a restore/reinstall CD or you will restore from a special
partition on the hard disk, that information should be in the user's manual.

I can't do as outlined in the user's manual as I don't have the accompanying
CD, and unfortunately this system has no EISA partition with the stuff on,
that's why I need a "manual" way of fixing this...

Best regards

In that case you will have to call the manufacturer and get a reinstall
cd or a restore kit or you will have to buy a Windows XP cd. If you can
find someone with the same type of Windows CD as you have installed on
the computer then you may be able to use your product key with the
borrowed cd.

I think I found how to do it. It is possible to use sysprep for triggering
mini-setup at next reboot, see:

That wont return the computer to factory state, it will take the mess
you have and prepare it for cloning, in other word it will make an
identical image to what you have now and you will end up with the same
thing that you have now, bugs and all.

Yes, I am aware of that. But my main goal was to trigger the user settings
part of the OEM setup, ie mini-setup, and this seems to be just what the
mentioned article is about.
