Under "My Network Places/Entire Network/Microsoft Windows Network/"
I have an entry with a network icon (three screens in a triangle) and
a persons name (say Fred Nerk) as the title. This was set up using
the networking wizard when trying to locally network my XP computer to
Fred Nerk's Apple iBook via ethernet so we could share his broadband
connection while we were visiting. The attempt at networking failed,
so we just alternated on using the broadband connection, but now I am
home I want to remove the Fred Nerk network icon.

I can't.

Clicking on the icon brings up an error message after a delay saying
"Fred Nerk is not accessible. You might not have permission...etc"

Rightclicking on the icon gives a Properties option which just shows
the name, there is no delete option.

Running the network wizard again just tries to set up a new one, no
option to delete the existing Fred Nerk one, so I abort it before
completion.

I've looked everywhere in the files and registry and there is no file
or entry with Fred Nerk in it.

I've looked in the XP local and online help and the MSKB for a means
of deleting the icon but could find nothing - I'm obviously asking the
wrong questions.

Can anyone tell me how to get rid of Fred Nerk please, or give me a
URL to look up on how to do it?

TIA

I am having a little trouble finding the area to which you refer, could you
be more specific? Otherwise, if you are looking at a Workgroup, that can be
changed under right click My computer-properties-Computer Name-Change.

When I open Windows Explorer, I get a listing of:

Desktop
+ My Documents
+ My Computer
+ My Network Places
Recycle Bin

Clicking on the + against My Network Places expands the entry to:
+ Entire Network

then clicking on that + expands Entire Network to:
+ Microsoft Terminal Services
+ Microsoft Windows Network
+ Web Client Network

Clicking on the + against Microsoft Windows Network shows (after a
long delay) the "Fred Nerk" network that I want to delete. I can't
find the way to delete this non-functional and inaccessible "Fred
Nerk" network.

Any ideas?

Try clearing your netbios cache nbtstat -RR

Thanks, but it didn't remove Fred Nertz.
A nbtstat -n still lists my computer name as UNIQUE and Fred Netz as
GROUP under Wireless Network Connections.

That probably explains why the setup didn't work in the first place -
I was trying to set up an Ethernet wired connection, not a Wireless
Connection!

I'll go look further. Any other suggestions?

OK I've fixed it, the GROUP listing in nbtstat -n triggered the brain.
I went to My Computer/Properties/Computer Name and found the workgroup
had been changed to Fred Nertz. Cleared that and changed it back to
Workgroup as it was before, and I'm in business.
Thanks for your help.
