how reliable are the new perpendicular hard drives?

Were do you see that? I see only that the 1.8" disk by Toshiba
may have had problems...

Still, it is a new technology, so there _is_ a risk. Also
there may be risks that only become apparent after perpendicular
recording has been used for some years.

Best approach: Be prepared. Any disk can fail. Even if you have
one with relatively high reliability, you still need to be
prepared for it failing.
