I use a sightly old Epson 1650 scanner with Epson Twain 5.71 driver.
(Is it correct to call Epson Twain a "driver")?

Sometimes when I go into an application to scan, XP says that another
application is using the scanner and that I can't use it.

I might get this message even if the other application has been closed.

I guess the lock is on the driver.
How do I release this lock?

One way is to reboot.
Are you using Windows XP SP2? If not go to Windows Update.

Yes, you can call TWAIN a driver. It does speak to the hardware.

Do you have the latest TWAIN driver installed?

The latest is Version 5.71 Revision F.

I would remove the current driver and reinstall the newly downloaded driver
and see if that fixes the problem.

Is this your latest Epson software? Check the Epson web site and
download the latest driver. Be warned that XP doesn't support a lot of
older scanners, lost my home scanner by upgrading.
If you can't get a recent driver remove the Epson software and reload,
without the scanner attached to the computer. Turn off the computer
attach the scanner and start the computer. If it is going to work that
should do it. Thaere are some reasonably priced third party scanning
packages that may help.
