I am wondering how often we should perform scandisk (or chkdsk)?
Once a week or month? Raymond

I never run Chkdsk (there is no Scandisk in XP) unless there is a file
system problem. If you decide to run Chkdsk, make sure to back your data
up ahead of time since there is a risk of data corruption.

It's chkdsk. Windows XP has no scandisk.

There's no need to run it on any schedule. I would run it only when
you have, or suspect you have, a disk problem.

Defrag maybe, no need to run chkdsk unless there's a problem, hell, I never
run defrag!

Unless you are actually experiencing a specific problem related to your
hard drive's file system, there's no real need to run Chkdsk. The
utility is not designed to be used as part of any periodic maintenance
plan; it's simply a diagnostic tool. If a file system or hard drive
error is detected during the boot process, Chkdsk will also launch
automatically.

I don't understand. How can CHKDSK *cause* data corruption?

I work on the basis that if something can go wrong it will go wrong -
usually at the most inconvenient or embarassing time - causing as much a
problem as possible. That's why I error check the hard disk
<C><Properties>Tools><Check Now> on a monthly schedule. Some will see that
as excessive. Indeed, strictly speaking, you needn't do any preventive
maintenance until the day before disaster.

The defragmenter program is called defrag, not scandisk. Its a wimpy
version of Diskeeper. Does a poorer job, and has very limited visuals of
general file types what's on the partition with the drive map feature as
compared to the Diskeeper retail at the time of XP release. Once a month is
fine for it since its performance as a defragmenter is so limited. Alot of
people simply don't use XP defrag for the same reason.

Have you ever heard or used a program called "diskdefrag_install 115."

Thanks Dave.
