How not to share files over Internet but still over intranet?

I would like to share files over my home network (through my network
places) but not over Internet. How do I do that? If I disable "file and
printer sharing for Microsoft Networks", would I still be able to share
files through my network places?

Using a router would be your best bet.

No, you won't be able to. I take it you don't have a firewall or a NAT
router. You can get yourself a LinkSyS BESFR41 NAT router (40 bucks on
Amazon) - that will take care of the issue of sharing files over the
internet.

Get a small hardware firewall appliance - not just a NAT box, but something
that does packet filtering and port blocking. It's worth the extra money.
They go for about $125 on average, from what I've seen. There are too many
malicious people out there, and NAT alone isn't going to stop them.

Just hooking it up will work. The router will basically assign non-routable
addresses to your local LAN so your PC will not be directly accessible
from the Internet.

Zonelab's freeware package for personal use alllows you to exampt your
local network IP range, This would block the internet and not the
Intranet. The setup is under the 'firewall' heading
