After installing some new memory I noticed when pc was booting that I had
disconneted the power cable on the floppy.I tried to reconnect it as it was
booting up and
it died.I realise I'm really to stupid to own a pc but...have I fried the
MB.
It switches on but nothing happens.Screen is blank.

1. well first of all are any of the lights turned on? if they are then
its not your power supply...
2. If the screen is blank...do you hear any humming...like from hard
drive...or does the CD rom turn on...
3. Plug in headphones in and turn it on...does it make any sound???
maybe u didint plug in your RAM correctly...is it ASUS mobo? They
sometimes have problem with RAM slots...

Try and use the old memory and see if the computer recovers, if it does then
the new mem may be the wrong type needed or might be defective. What type of
memory were you using originally? The new memory type?

Check all your connections.
Power supply will shut off if any of the power cables are shorted.
Make sure it's not the case

No doubt I caused a major short.Pc is still turning on but makes no attempt
to start. No sound only power light>
I hoped that I might have blown a a fuse(if such existed) on the MB but
alas.

Did you try disconnecting the floppy drive's power cable?
If so, try replacing the power supply.

Days with circuit fuse are over. All power supply have overload protection,
and will turn off.
So, once again
Recheck all cables
Disconnect all HD's floppy drive, cd/dvd rom
If system will start up, turn if off and connect HD first, then off and
connect another device.
If doesn't then try another PS
Also do you hear Hd working ?

Scott,
Remove the CMOS battery to reset the BIOS then put it back in, might work..
Did you put the old mem back in, did it click in and lock? Or remove all mem
sticks and boot up, do you here any beeps?

Installed my first cd rom many years after a bottle of wine.
Tonight I'm concerating on the wine(a good californian red(s)).
Still in shock at my stupidity.get back to this sunday. Thanks for
the undeserved support.

Remove the power cable from the floppy. If you still have it connected, and
it "is" shorted, the power supply will trip out (overload device). Allow the
computer to cool down for a few minutes and turn it on again. Does it now
work? If it does not, you may have killed either the M/B or the power
supply. Only the better class power supplies have the automatic overload
protection device. Cheaper supplies may just have a fuse.

If it makes you feel any better, years ago I did a very similar thing.
My symptoms were also almost identical to yours... virtually a dead
system. Replacing the power supply did the trick and the system booted
without any more problems.

Moral: don't plug in anything while the system is running.

Try reseting the bios. Either remove the battery or short the pins on the
motherboard. Obviously read the manual to find out how to do it correctly
for your board. Clearing cmos has healped me in the past sort out similar
problems.
