I have a
- 2.4ghz,
- 5x 80mm fans
- 1 cathode
- 2x 7200 harddrives
- 64mb vidcard
- cdrw
- zip
- floppy

is 350w enough? I dont wanna go extreme with 500w or something, i just want
whats enough. please advise

Do you have a link to the cathode, I'm not familiar with those. other than
that you should be fine as long as it's a quality power supply. Sometimes
software that detects voltages can be essential also.

Yep. People buy CHEAP 300-350W PSU's and have problems so they assume they
need more W. I'm running a 2.53 P4 oclocked to 2.85, 2 HD's, 2 fans, CDRW,
various cards (firewire/scsi/SB/ti4200) on a good 300W PSU.

Yes, if the power supply is first or second rate.

Get rid of at least 3 of those fans and the neon light. The light
can't be seen through the solid metal case anyway, and I'm sure you
have enough sense to not include a window made of flammable plastic.

snip

You have to remember that some servers have multiple CPUs and 8 drives
or more. A 500 w PSU is a necessity in these circumstance's.

What's the wattage on the cathode, should be listed on the unit.

How do I know if a power supply is first or second rate? Is there a rating
system?

I too have what seems to be a useless light inside the case - I can't see it
with the case closed. What's it for?

Thanks,

Check www.tomshardware.com for the reviews they published a few months
ago and late last year. The companies that made the top-rated power
supplies in those reviews are some of the first-rate ones, and they
include Fortron/Sparkle, HEC/Heroichi, and Antec TruePower.
Generally, any company that sells most of its products to large
computer makers and emphasizes plain grey or galvanized power supplies
over decorated ones makes first-rate supplies.

Second-rate supplies include Enermax and the many brands made by
Sirtec, including Vantec and Thermaltake. They're not bad but just
won't put out quite as much power as the best. But buy anything
worse.

It probably an LED to indicate the presense of the +5V standby
voltage, and some motherboards have several LEDs to give some
diagnostic information. None of these are useless, unlike the
fluorescent lights that some people install.
