How do I know if a power supply is first or second rate? Is there a
rating system?
Check
www.tomshardware.com for the reviews they published a few months
ago and late last year. The companies that made the top-rated power
supplies in those reviews are some of the first-rate ones, and they
include Fortron/Sparkle, HEC/Heroichi, and Antec TruePower.
Generally, any company that sells most of its products to large
computer makers and emphasizes plain grey or galvanized power supplies
over decorated ones makes first-rate supplies.
Second-rate supplies include Enermax and the many brands made by
Sirtec, including Vantec and Thermaltake. They're not bad but just
won't put out quite as much power as the best. But buy anything
worse.
I too have what seems to be a useless light inside the case - I
can't see it with the case closed. What's it for?
It probably an LED to indicate the presense of the +5V standby
voltage, and some motherboards have several LEDs to give some
diagnostic information. None of these are useless, unlike the
fluorescent lights that some people install.
