You can format and clean install as many times as you want. You can only
have XP installed on one machine at a time.

There's no limit to the number of times you can reinstall and activate
the same WinXP license on the same PC. Nor is there ever a charge. Nor
does a Product Key (so long as it's not an evaluation license) ever
expire. If it's been more than 120 days since you last activated that
specific Product Key, you'll most likely be able to activate via the
Internet without problem. If it's been less, you might have to make a 5
minute phone call.

Here are the facts pertaining to activation:

The more important question is probably "Why do you need to reformat
and reinstall Windows so often?" I have never done so with Windows
XP on my own computers since it was released.

Good luck

I'm beginning to think this is a non-En glish speaking person and what he
means is how many instances can he install XP on a drive. IFF that's the
case, OP, then the answer is you can only install XP ONE time on any ONE
computer, but you can do that as many times as you want to on THAT computer.
You cannot have two installations of XP on the same computer.
