How many motherboards are actually bootable from USB stick?

Recently I had a discussion about how many of the motherboards are actually bootable from
USB stick.

So I ask you.

If you look on all the motherboards which are sold in lets say the last 3 years:
What would you say: How many percent of them are capable to boot from U3 USB sticks?

I think it is less than 20%

Am I right?

Mine does and its some 4-5 years old.

Plus you need the HP USB tool to format the stick, and make it bootable, very
hard to find tool.

I doubt it. My board in this machine is more than 3 years old and it
has that ability - and I didn't choose the board because of that. In
fact, I didn't even know that it would do it until it had been in use
for over a year.

If you're talking about the last 3 years only, then I'd say it's 100%
that are USB bootable. It's not the motherboard that determines whether
you can boot from USB or not, it's the BIOS. All BIOSes in the last 3
years should be USB capable.

Probably not. My one-year-old Compaq laptop will boot from a USB stick;
my three-year-old HP desktop will not. That's 50%, but I admit that's a
pretty small sample. <g>

My sample is a little larger...at least 12 motherboards over the last five
years, from Intel, iGoLogic, Asus, and shoot can't remember the other. The
number for me is 100%. This Dell D600 might, I don't recall and have never
needed it.

If I were to make a friendly wager, I'd say for the last three years the
number is >95%.

You do not boot the motherboard (proper title is system board) - you cannot
determine USB boot ability by "looking" at the board - check board
specifications (or BIOS type).
An U3 device is not a "standard" USB device - it contains proprietary
software and not suitable as a boot device. USB boot capability has been
around for years and the majority of board s(BIOS) provide for USB boots.
