How many IDE and SATA drives can I hook up to a P4P800 Deluxe?

And is there a maximum number of Gigs that the board supports?

I don't plan on using Raid and am wondering how difficult it will be
to put the new system together. This will be my first.

tnx.......

Assuming you have a use for all that storage, in theory you could hook up 2
HDD on the Primary IDE Channel, 2 more on each of the Via RAID channels (it
would be seen as 4 separate disks under the default JBOD (Just a Bunch of
Disks) array, plus two SATA drives on the SATA channels. If you could do
without optical drives in theory you could put 2 more IDE drives on the
secondary IDE channel.

Of course all this assumes that your power supply could handle all those
disks. I don't think that disk size per se is a problem right now unless
you got above the larges sizes commonly offered these days, such as going
above 250GB or 300GBs.

It is possible that there are some hidden issues with the BIOS or Windows
(assuming you are using that) that would cause problems if you put in an
enormous number of drives and GBs, such as the maximum example I gave above,
but I'm not aware of it.

If you were going to put in, say, 4 drives, I doubt you would have any
issues at all. I have 4 drives in my P4P800 Deluxe right now.

I just installed my p4p800 deluxe last night and have 4 drives in it
also.
I was curious though, is there a way to make my 2 WD drives (currently
configured as a 240gig raid drive) on the Via ide ports my "C" drive?

I've setup I think everything in the Bios to do this, but it still is
my 5th drive in XP, (seen as a "G" drive, after both of my optical
drives even). I'd like to back this partition up, but my boot files
are on another drive, the "C" drive.

Is there anyway to make the Raid array the C drive? I know know if I
could figure it out, I'd have to reload XP again, but thats ok, since
I only have the basics installed so far.

With my experiences with RAID0, you would probably speed up boot time, but
it is unlikely to offer any other benefit beyond that. I find it a lot more
useful to have a smallish system drive (~20-40GB) and a larger RAID0 array
on separate physical disks for non-system and non-application files. It is
far easier to make periodic back-ups when the system drive is its own
physical drive on one partition.
