how many HDD can i have on my XP pc?

I have an emachine with xp running, I would like to have a few more hard
drives added.

does anyone know how many I can have, with out blowing up the pc!!!

It depends mainly on two things.

How much additional power can your existing power supply handle.

How many ATA cable slots your motherboard has. Normally each cable has 2
connectors, from which it needs one connector for each CD/DVD/Burner drive
you have, the balance can be used for HDDs.

Of course the simple answer is to buy the largest drive(s) available and
multi-partition them.
 
In addition to what John said;
Do you have physical room in the computer to mount additional hard drives?
Most of the e-machines I have worked on do not have space to mount more than
one hard drive.
If the PC case does have room for extra hard drives, you can add as many
hard drives as the Power Supply can handle by using plug-in controller
boards.
However, every emachine I have worked on has a miserably small power supply,
usually less than 150 watts. You will need more than 300 watts to do what
you want.
