How many DNS servers?

I hope some one can guide me thru this. I am new at DNS
so your help will be greatly appreciated.
I recently upgraded my nt boxes (4) to w2k AD. one for
exchange server, one for file/print, one for RAS, and the
other for SQL. I setup DC1 with DNS.. is pointing itself
for DNS. My questions is.. should I create another DC with
DNS for backup? if so, do I need to manually doit? or just
point it back to DC1..... also AD is working in native
mode. Thanks

Two DNS servers (especially if you back them up to tape etc.) are already
sufficient for simple redundancy.

The real issue after two is performance and bandwidth usage if you have
a WAN.

If not WANS are involved (within your net) and only a few dozen to a few
hundred clients then two (or three) DNS servers are likely fine and you can
add more IF you perceive a problem.

Good morning Blu,

Creating an additional domain controller running DNS would be wise to
provide redundancy.

When you install the new DC with DNS, point it to DC1 for preferred DNS and
to itself for secondary DNS. Replication from DC1 will add the zone/records
automatically to the new DC.

Point your clients to DC1 as preferred and DC2 as secondary.

Thanks and have a great day.
