Think sockets. The chip in the socket is called a physical processor.
Vista Home Basic and Premium can use one. Any number of cores is OK. Cores
are called logical processors.

Vista Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate can use two sockets. Any number of
cores in each is OK.

Only Windows Server editions can use 4 cpus and up.

Huh? I just bought HP quad core w vista home premium. They claim it
works, and you say it doesn't. How can I tell whether it's using all 4
or just 1?

A quad core is still only one physical cpu.

Hey Stonewall
I've got a HP Quad Core running and yes it is only one physical CPU, it is
using all four cores.
I've also got a gadget on the side bar showing quad core usage. You can
Google for Vista gadgets to find a quad core monitor.

Vista Home can handle one physical cpu chip, which is why Intel and
AMD came out with dual and quad core cpus all on one physical cpu
chip. To see how many cpu cores your pc is using do a right click on
the Task Bar, then a left click on Task Manager, then a left click on
the Performance tab. If you see multiple boxes you have multiple cores
all being used. If you only see one box you either only have a single
core cpu or the others are not enabled. To enable them could be
complicated or easy, the easy way is in the BIOS. All that is for
another Thread.

I said no such thing. You don't have 4 cpus. You have one cpu with four
cores. Like I said.
