As I sit here listening to music thorugh Media player .. whilst online
surfing and downloading .. the cpu is at 100% cpu usage .. I wonder what the
lifespan is for a cpu if I just sit here for several months .. being fed
intravenously .. with the nescessarry plumbing of course ..

When I see the cpu at 100% I usually intervene to stop it working so hard
cheers
cw ..

The CPU is far from the slowest component in your system (hard disks for
example
are much slower). If yours is constantly at 100% usage by just listening to
music and
surfing/downloading, something is wrong, like spyware or some other badly
behaving process.

Run AdAware (www.lavasoft.de) and SpyBotSearch&Destroy (google to find it)
periodically.

Yep unless you have a P233MMX and 64Mb of ram this is way too little to max
out CPU usage.

You would be well off to learn more about CPUs rather than
guess at what would make them fail. Typical CPU should run
at full load for a decade or longer... or until other parts
like the fan die first, and many do run at full load 24/7.

How long do you plan on using yours that this might be a
problem? A decade from now will you be able to buy a viable
motherboard or other parts to keep the system running, since
the CPU will be one of the longest lasting parts even if at
full load the whole time?

How hot is it at 100%? That's what you need to ask.

As long as the CPU is not over heated, and as long as the supply voltages to
it are in specs. There is no logical reason for it to fail. It is possible
however, for a part on a mother board to fail, and thus cause some damage to
other devices, including the CPU. But, this is not a common occurrence.

How did you figure out that your CPU was running at the maximum usage?

If the CPU is showing that it is continuously working at its maximum usage,
you should investigate everything that is running on the computer, to see if
there are any undesirable softwares, such as Trojans, and ect that may be
running in the background. If a CPU is working at full capacity all the
time, there is definitely something that is using a lot of resources.

I give it 20 days.

Nah just kidding. There is no damage done when a CPU runs 100% all the time.
But your computer's performance drops way down when an app uses 100% of the
CPU. That's not supposed to happen. I'd see what's causing it and correct
it.

The CPU will work indefinitely at 100%; that is NOT what wears it out. It
is the CPU's temperature over time that wears it out. The higher the
temperature, the shorter the life.

there are some others too... check out majorgeeks.com for lots of other
spyware removers. Also, dont do general internet searches (google etc)
for removers. Sometimes some that advertise themselves as removers are in
fact spyware themselves. There are even some adaware lookalikes that are
fakes and will try to take your money. They *find* loads of stuff and try
to get you to buy whatever it is they are selling.

Also, check out task manager (without running anything else) too see
whats eating up most of your cpu time. If you are not sure what the
process is, look it up. Eg: p2p networking looks harmless enough... but
its not. There are sites that these lists but I cannot think of them
offhand.

Im hesitant to mention this one because it can really mess things up if
not used correctly...

Take a look at 'hijack this'. Read about it so you understand what it is.
Run a scan and save the log (do NOT try to fix anything). Then post it to
a site like computercops.com to see if someone there can take a look and
give advice on whether anything is amis.
