How long should a 4GB DVD take to write at 16x?

I'm backing up files on a Win XP pro Dell, 1GB of memory, 2.8Ghz, to a
DVD using Nero Express 6. In the dialog box while it's writing to the DVD,
the clock starts to count down from 5 minutes and it says it's writing at
22,160 KB/s. My math(could be wrong) says this should be done in that amount
of time. It takes about an hour. Any suggestions?

My own experience with a 16X DVD burner on a 2.5 GHz Pentium 4, XP home, 1
Gig RAM and Easy Media Creator 8 is that the actual time to write is highly
variable, and seems to depend strongly on file size. A few
multi-hundred-Meg files will burn in 6-7 minutes, but thousands of smaller
files can take the better part of an hour to burn (and to verify).
