How long does an upgrade take

My note book has been updating for about 3 1/2 hours. There is a little disk
activity and the screen is not frozen. I ran the advisor and it told me just
remove norton security and that I would need to find drivers for a few
things. I was just wondering If it fails does it stop and tell you, or do
youjust wait till for ever.

Hi KT :-)

An upgrade does take much longer than a clean install, and In some cases it
can take 3+ hours to complete. Yes...if it fails you will know, as it will
give you an error message, and simply roll back the upgrade to the original
OS and end. Let it take it's time to do what it needs to do, how long
depends on your processor speed, and the size of the original files. I've
done several during testing, on 3 different machines, and each one is
different, so the time it takes varies for each machine.

Hope this helps.

No.... You will not know if you have a problem. Read thru this board and see
how many people have had their installations just HANG / Lock up and NOT give
an error messages. Myself and several others let our upgrades run for over
24 hours without getting an error and without ever completing. I Had to do
a Hard Reboot and let XP get reinstalled.

Were you trying to do an upgrade? Or a clean install? Did you read the
install information before you started? Is your computer Vista
ready/compatible? Was your download good? Did you burn the iso to the DVD
properly? A copy or an image? There are reasons why an install fails.
Under a normal upgrade process it can take a long as 3-5 hours to complete,
and yes, if it fails for some reason it will give the error details and then
roll back to the previous OS. Your problem is an exception, not the norm,
and to say that it does not give an error message under normal circumstances
is incorrect. If there is no progress
indicated in at least an hour, then the process should be aborted.

Hope this helps.
