Vista Defragmenter does it in the background, and as defragging is ALWAYS
work in progress, there is no end..

Defragging a hard drive in the background takes a while.

If you work with text documents you can cut down on fragmentation
drastically by NOT using the Save command. The Save command writes only the
changes and grabs the first available free space on the disk. After a while
a file gets scattered all over the drive and it begins to take a while to
load a file due to the drive having to hop all over the disk to pull it into
memory. Use the Save As command instead. That writes a new copy of the
entire file and thus the file is contiguous and the read head does not have
to skip about.
