How is DNS installed on a child domain

My company is setting up a child domain in another country and
connecting it to the parent domain via VPN. Can the DNS be installed
succesfully if the child domain is not already connected to the parent
domain. And if so how would this be done?

Thanks

I'm not sure what you are trying to achieve. DNS is independent of
Active Directory but can reside on DCs. It can be "Active Directory
Integrated" which is a bad term because it implies that it is somehow
linked into the Active Directory. In fact the only Active Directory
service that it uses is replication. Think of DNS separately from Active
Directory and things may appear clearer.

Do you have a 'parent' domain in one site and separately set up child
Domain already set up in another site? If so, you cannot then connect
the child Domain into the parent Domain.

If you haven't created the child Domain yet, then I would first set up
DNS on a server in the child site, and ensure that DNS connectivity back
to the main DNS servers is working. Then I would set up the new child
Domain once you are sure that DNS is working properly.

You can set up the site's DNS so that it holds a copy of the parent's
zone and then use that DNS when setting up the child Domain.

Afterwards, when you have a working AD setup you could AD Integrate the DNS.

NO offense cliff, but you went off on some tangent that had nothing to
do with my question. If you were thinking of another question when you
answered this, thats kewl, but my question was still not answered in
what ever you were pontificating about

What i want to know, is can yo uset up DNS on a child domain if you are
not connected to the parent domain, and if so how can this be done.
better yet, can you even set up the child domain if you are not
connected to the parent domain in one way or another, IE VPN

Thanks in advance for a straight forward response

Actually, Cliff is right on target. DNS and AD are separate entities. In
order to set up a child domain from the active directory perspective, you
must be able to contact the parent domain controller. As far as DNS goes,
you can set it up as you see fit, your DNS zones don't have any direct ties
to AD. You can set up the offshore.subsidiary.com DNS domain as if it were a
child of the subsidiary.com domain if you please - they're just names. But
if you want your Windows domains to operate, do as Cliff suggests and
establish your WAN links before attempting it.

1) What do you mean by 'can you even set up the child domain if you are
not connected to the parent domain in one way or another' A child domain
has to connect with the parent domain or you will have problems. You
cannot set up a child domain without access to the parent domain

2) What do you mean by 'can you set up DNS on a child domain....'? You
can set up DNS totally separately from setting up any Domains, child or
parent. An Active Directory Domain needs either a DNS system to be
pre-existing, or needs to set up a DNS system when it is created.

Please expand on what you are trying to do. And the order in which you
are trying to do things.

Cheers,

Cliff
