How important is Java?

A friend of mine has a couple of large (120MB) Java updates that he
unwittingly downloaded to his system.
However he doesn't seem to have Java itself installed or operating - there's
nothing in his C:\Windows\Java folder except two folders, one for each update.
How important is it to have Java properly installed and running - he doesn't
do much except typical surfing, doesn't want or need to go into any fancy
websites - can he safely delete those folders and release some disk space?
What will he lose/be unable to do?
Many thanks

Some sites require Java to work. Some require specific versions of
Java. Some work more smoothly with Java (e.g. sites with Java
rollovers), but may work without Java.

The bottom line is: does your friend needs to use sites which require
Java? If not, uninstall Java (don't delete it): if your friend does
so, and it turns out that he needs Java, it is easy to re-install it.

BTW, if Java is installed, it should be kept up to date, otherwise
security vulnerabilities may imperil your friend's PC.

Great - that's pretty much what I suspected, good to have it confirmed.
Many thanks for the advice
