How important is AD ? Cant we get rid of AD completely ?

Q1. Cant we have a environemtn just like VPN, where you get onto to
whatever application you need of your business through internet...
Q2. Stay on Internet and still access the business app through proper
authentication/security.. why does one need AD at all ?

A1. Domain - Not necessary - Internet is a single domain byitself
(work group)
A2. Security - Apply network and application level security

Post your thoughts..... I think for big company's AD is a added cost,
where it can work without AD

I think you are confusing an active directory domain with an Internet
domain. They have no relationship. An Active Directory is a security and
central administration model. The larger the organization, the more you
need it. It brings resource sharing, permissions, policy enforcement and
more into a central management model. There's nothing else like it, and
most large IT departments would consider it essential.
