HITACHI HDT722516DLAT80 160GB 3.5" PATA INTERNAL HARD DISK DRIVE 160GB IDE

Normally I use Maxtor HDD's but not very reliable I think, Samsung rocks but cant find any out there these days.

How good are these?

Maxtor and Seagate are probably the most reliable drives I've ever used.

Hitachi Bought out IBM's drive division if I remember correctly becuase they were inundated with poor quality. I will never buy a Hitachi/IBM drive again!!

Seagate, Maxtor, Western Digital, Samsung

Of course its your choice

There is no best make of hard drive, it's that simple.

It all depends on the factory where it was made and which batch it came from.

People will often spout on about which hard drive is best based purely on their own experiences.

If that were the case I would roundly diss Western Digital as I've had loads of their HDD's crap out on me. But I'm still using 2 of their Raptor drives.

I prefer Samsung myself, purely cos they look good and they're quiet. And no problems yet.

As for Hitachi, yes they bought out the IBM disk making section and relabelled the drives Hitachi. Yes, IBM went through a very bad period where thousands of their drives broke down, I had 2 x 20Gb drives myself go wrong from IBM at that time. But we're talking 1999 - 2001 which is what? 6 to 7 years ago.

At that time the drives were marketed as 'Deskstar' drives but soon earned the nickname 'Deathstar'.

Hitachi, in my opinion, now make good Hard Drives, certainly as good as any other manufacturer.

See my signature and you'll note that my storage disk is an Hitachi 250Gb SATA drive, it's been worked hard for about 6 months now.

I won't recommend any make of drive over another but I would say go ahead and buy the Hitachi if you like the look of it.

I agree. Samsung for me has been rock solid and it was only 20gig HDD til I upgraded it.

btw: why was desk star nicknamed deathstar?

Personally I would have got the Samsung P120 series HDD IDE and they have the fastest transfer time compared to others in that sector. Its just that no one sells them now so I turned to Hitachi.

Well.... if you read my above post again ;)

IBM made a hard disk series and named them Deskstars.

They broke down in their thousands, RMA a go-go for a coupla years.

Some wag started calling them 'Deathstars' instead of 'Deskstars' on some Forum or other.

Thus the nickname was born :)

btw, apart from Hitachi, which I've only ever bought one of, the only makes of hard disk that have never broken down on me are Samsung and Maxtor.

But like I said, that really don't mean Jack :)

To be honest I have never heard Samsung HDD's break down, I know lots of ppl who own them. They are quite an unknown quantity given that most ppl when they think of HDD's think of Western Digital , seagate .
