How does someone id my computer through e-mail images?

I get these messages saying XP has blocked images in certain e-mails
to "prevent sender from identifying" my computer.

How does this work?

Images are stored on servers, and if your email program downloads the image, then, as part of internet standard, the server has your I.P. (internet protocol) address. That is the information that the server has.
Use extreme caution when you get un-solicited & spam emails. Do not allow download of images from an unknown or untrusted source.
Make certain that your system has an up-to-date antivirus & anti-malware program(s).
