how does "plug & play" run and install the driver for the device?

I've bought a 7 in 1 USB card reader/writer, but the windows 2000
Professional on my IBM Thinkpad T30 considers it as a SD/MMC
reader/writer and install below drivers:

"USB mass storage device"(usbstor.sys)under "Universal Serial Bus
Controllers",
"Generic SD USB reader device"(disk.sys) under "Disk Drivers"
"Generic Volume" (no driver) under "Storage Volumes"

So only SD/MMC card reader is functional.

This card/reader DOES work well on some machine not only for SD/MMC,
but also for CF,MS, etc...

I want to know how can I let the system know it is a multiple card
reader instead of SD/MMC card reader only.

TIA

The system needs the correct drivers for your device. You should find them on
the manufacturer's website (which is always the first place you should look
for a solution to any problem, BTW.) MS may have an updated, driver, too.
(support.microsoft.com. has lots of useful info, and an excellent search
facility. Bookmark it, and look for answers there, too.)

No operating system can come with drivers for all possible devices, even the
one current at the time of the OSs release, let alone devices that were
developed after the OS itself.

Unfortunately, the driver from the manufacturer's website does not
work on my laptop.

I think windows 2000 include this kind of driver already as the card
reader workes on others' windows 2000 (almost same image). I just
curious why it is not recognized on my laptop. How can I push the
system recognize it and install the driver automaticaly?

Those drivers of "Generice CF card reader" "Generice xxx card
reader"... should be installed at the same time.

IMO, you probably have subtle hardware differences compared to the other W2K
machines on which the driver works. W2K is very hardware sensitive, and so
are many of the drivers it uses. Just how to diagnose that is a question I'm
not qualified to answer. You might try finding some diagnostic software, but
then you'd also need to learn how to interpret the results.

Good luck!
