setting up a server or a website?

*Post to alt.binaries.freeware with an NFO or DIZ file describing the
software.

*Ask a few webmasters (several can be found right here) to audition your
software and if they like it, they may post it on their sites.

*Submit it to such freeware sites as Fileforum (betanews.com) or Freeware
Guide.

Best of luck,,,

Easy, have someone here host it for you.

If you tell people what the software is called, what it does, what
size it is, what systems it works on etc. etc. then someone is sure to
be interested in trying it out. Just email it to them.

If the "tryout" suggests something worthwhile then the first sentence
above shouldn't be a problem.

Regards, John.

The software program is a glaze recipe app. It does a chemical analysis of
a glaze and will open or save a glaze recipe that can be edited or copied.
It actually might be a program that could be adjusted for other similar
uses. It has a material file and chemicals file which can be edited. You
could actually put in the chemicals and materials that you want in these two
files as long as they followed the right format. I could see adapting this
to count calories, carbs, etc. for example.

As a glaze recipe application it would have a small audience I would think.

Try using a jedi mind trick to make people "believe" they are using the
program, even if they aren't!

What kind of chemical analysis does the program do? You would have to
specify the chemical components of the glaze first right?

Does the analysis predict the glaze firing temp?

This requires a link to a website.

I think the OP has the following viable options:
1. submit it to a software repository. I think Simtel allows the
uploading of files. There are probably others.
2. determine if your ISP gives you a web site for free. Many do. Even
AOL (AFAIK). In this case, problem sorted.
3. set up a site with one of the freebie hosts. I suspect that many of
the freebies restrict what sort of files can be uploaded - so you may
have to experiment to see what's allowed.

Probably, option 2 is the best, assuming it's available.

Only so that it can be downloaded and evaluated.
How else is he going to distribute it ??
read the page again:
...."Files for inclusion in the TQF database "...
- infers a database of files??

If an app is small enough (Tiny Apps sized) and I think it is useful, I
will host it. I have limited bandwith, so bigger apps are a no-no.

Well, number 1, he's still going to need a website for that anyway. And
number 2, the link you gave doesn't actually state that it's a
repository. In my mind "database of files" implies "database of
descriptions" rather than "repository of applications". Plus, when you
go to download something, there's some palava about being a registered
user.

Looking at the submissions page, it has phrases like "Totally Free
Software will be listed at topqualityfreeware as long as the above
applies.", reinforcing the suspicion that it's merely a listing site.
And one for which you have to register, to boot.

So all things considered, TopQualityFreeware is a bit of a nonstarter.
In my opinion.

So I stand by everything I said originally.

If your application targets a special interest group, witch i presume is
the case for you, you could try to get it hosted at some special interest
sites,
Like
http://www.ceramics.org/
http://www.kickwheel.com/MBchem%20anaylsis.html
or
http://www.ceramicsmonthly.org/mustreads/substitutions.asp
for example (I dunno what group you are epecialy targetting)

It might be very interstign for these sites to offer freebees to attract
visitors, giving you yout space bandthwith and some resources to edit your
own page on the site.

This thread is glazing right over me.

In addition to the other answers: if you release your application as open
source, there are several options for free hosting.

There are several people hosting servers for developers of free
software. I use gna.org. The admin has a very short response time. The
only thing is, that the licence you use has to be compatible to GPL
(see gnu.org for details).

Gna.org offers:

* a homepage
* a download area
* a version controll system (cvs, gnu-arch?, subversion?)
* a task/support/bug tracker
* a mailing list management

As a benefit, you may see other interesting projects you like to join,
or others may like to join yours.

Bernd

Hi,
What I do is upload to a Yahoo! Group that I created at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/JoeCaverlysProgrammingStuff

Recently, I uploaded a little program to do temperature conversion I
wrote using Delphi 2.0

It's in the Files section under folder JCConv, called JCConv.exe

The program converts temperature between Celcius and Fahrenheit and
vice versa.

I wrote the program to figure out how to update a second text box
with information from the first text box, without updating the text
box in which I was entering data.

You could create your own Yahoo! Group, upload your programs there,
and post the announcement in this newsgroup.

Joe
