How do anti-spyware utilities (like Spyware Search & Destroy, Spyware
Doctor) immunize the OS? I would like to know what impact this will
have on my system before running it.

thanks

They add site names and IP #'s to your restricted sites under your security
tab in Internet options in Internet exploder for example.

I thought they added sites to your hosts file.

That does happen in the registry. However, the 'killbit' is or may be reset
(also in the registry) which disables the ability of certain sites to run
ActiveX controls installed on one's computer.

I can imagine that not too many of these companies are going to divulge
exactly what they do (after all, this is a kind of "arms race" between them
and the spyware authors, and it's a competitive race with other anti-spyware
vendors). If you're really interested, you could try downloading the regmon
and filemon utilities from http://www.sysinternals.com, and see what they
actually do.
