How does behavioral targeting work?

I am interested in knowing how Behavioral Targeting is implemented.
What are the tools used to track the page views by a customer who's
browsing your site? How would you know what other sites he is
visiting?

But what does this have to do with freeware? Just curious.

One way is by Java, Java Scripting, or Script. Most of this really only
works well for Internet Explorer. Another way is by server logs and such.
There are all kinds of nasty little scripts and applets to do all kinds of
information gathering. Search the Internet for free Java, Java applets,
Java Script, Scripts. Also try, Java for WebMasters, scripts for site
builders, etc. But, be warned, more and more, people are using browsers
that do not support Java and Scripting for just this sort of reason. In
other words, a lot of people do not like being spied on. ;)

Put "webmaster, behavioral targeting" into a http://google.com or
http://vivisimo.com search box. ;)

Lots of freeware applets, scripts etc. out there to help you with this I
believe.

A good example of such Java tracking is www.redsherrif.com.
