How does AV affect software installers?

I've read many times that you should turn off your AV software when
installing other software on your system. I don't think I've ever done
this but based on how often this is stressed I'm inclined to believe it's a
genuine problem for some.

How exactly does AV software interfere with software installers? And have
I been lucky or is it just a vocal minority that has managed to convince
the general public that AV screws up software installation?

Not just av software but all running programs and apps.

So are you saying it has nothing to do with the specific nature of AV
software? It's more related to ANY running programs that may have a hold
on shared DLLs and whatnot? If so, then it would probably be more helpful
for people to make that clear.

I've seen installs quit because apps have not been shut down before
starting the install. The running apps definitely were not av since I
don't use GUI version av scanners :) Your mileage will vary. You might
get away with it and you might not. So why not simply follow the
general rule and shut down running apps regardless of whether or not
the apps happen to be av software?

I guess because I think AV software is a useful thing to have running when
installing new software--especially software downloaded from the Internet.
