How does an upgrade package work for a Dell machine dual boot situation?

I have just installed Win XP onto a 2nd HD, Win Me is on the 1st HD; dual boot
situation. Microsoft Works 2000 is preinstalled onto the Win Me partition, and I
installed the Trial version of Office 2003 onto the NTFS partition of Win XP. I
expect to be uninstalling Office 2003 a day before the trial version expires (at
the end of September, it was installed at the beginning of July). However, I
expect to be ordering Word 2003 over the internet and according to what I've
read, I could save over $100 if I order the Upgrade product. Since M$ Works
Suite 2000 is a qualifying product, I expect that the upgrade package should
work. ....But how does it work? This would be on a Dell machine where Works was
preinstalled on the Win Me portion and it came with half a dozen CD disks for
Works. When I uninstall Office from Win XP, I'll just be left with Outlook
Express again and Wordpad. When I install Word 2003, will the Word 2003
installation disk ask for and accept one of the Dell M$ Works 2000 installation
disks; or do I have to install M$ Works 2000 onto the XP partition first and
then have Word 2000 upgraded to Word 2003?

I've also seen that Works 2006 is a pre-qualifying product. I saw that Works
2005 only had Word 2002, so that isn't what I want. I haven't seen Works 2006
yet, and if it isn't out yet and it comes out 2 months from now, would it have
Word 2003 on it? Works 2006 may be cheaper than the Word 2003 upgrade disk.

The point of Word 2003 for us is the Mail-Merge Wizard feature.

PS: I just saw the Mail-Merge feature in Word XP (is that true with the Word
2002 version?). But I am also trying to stay current with the security features
since the intended user reads a lot of documents from Hotmail. So, Word 2003 or
a later version is essential to us: unless Word 2003 is so far advanced that
documents made with older programs and sent by other people can't be read?
 
Hi Cymbal Man,

Yes, MS Word 2002, Word 2003 or Office XP (2002 series apps)
or Office 2003 upgrade packages will all recognize MS Works as a valid
qualifier for an upgrade.

If you're getting only Word, find Word 2002 acceptable,
you may find the pricing for MS Works Suite (http://works.msn.com)
to sometimes be a better one than the MS Word 2002 standalone
package, even as an upgrade. (Works Suite includes Word 2002).
Be sure you're buying 'retail' licensed versions rather than OEM.
OEM copies are licensed to a single machine rather than to a person
and that person's machine (i.e. OEM copies, which may look attractively
priced are not generally transferable to a new machine later on).

Word 2002 and 2003 both use the same basic file format. Word 2003
has some additional security features, XML support (in the Word 2003
standalone package) and is still in production. (Word 2002 is discontinued
other than in MS Works Suite).

Well, what is on M$ Works 2006 that gets released on October 10th, 2005? Anybody
know yet?

What is the next version of Word after Word 2003? Word 2007?
 
Are you sure you aren't talking about Microsoft Student 2006? Works Suite
2005 still has a rebate on it thru January 1, 2006. And since the new
version of Office isn't due out until next year, it doesn't make sense to
release yet another version of Works Suite with Word 2002 or even 2003 this
time.

The next release of Office and Word is currently called
'Office 12' (Office 2003 is v11). Only MS date given so
far is 'mid 2006' (or later).

There hasn't been an announcement by Microsoft of the next
MS Works Suite package date. Only the suite contains
a copy of MS Word. It used to be that the MS Works Suite
contained the current version of Word, newer MS Works Suite
packages now contain '1-back' versions.
