how do you use an external dvd player withinstalling Visata

The computer I am going to be putting windows vista on doesn't have a dvd
player and we have an external one. In the specs it said you can use an
external one.
If we reformat the HD since windows 2000 pro is on it now- will the bios see
the external hd when it is plugged into the computer? (I know we have to
change the boot sequence
If not how do we get it to accept the dvd external burner?
